Gangotri is a prominent holy town in Uttarkashi district in the state of Uttarakhand, India. The Hindu pilgrim town, Gangotri, lies on the banks of the river Ganga. The temple remains closed on the eve of Diwali by following a ceremony, where oil lamps are lit in the waters of Ganga.
